From plant-based burgers to chick’n nuggets, sliders and breakfast sandwiches, companies have launched a variety of new products in recent months and acquired brands to get prime products in the alternative protein space. Investors have also poured more than $16 billion into U.S. plant-based and cell-based meat companies in the past 10 years — $13 billion of it in in the last two years alone.
Plant-based and alternative protein products are shaping some of the biggest companies’ portfolios as many are trying to get into this red-hot sector.
A study by the Institute of Food Technologists (which we are members of) showed that globally 59% of consumers are actively seeking foods that are high in protein and come from plant-based or alternative protein sources.
Plant protein is a meaningful food source of protein which is from plants. This group can include tofu, soya, tempeh, seitan, nuts, seeds, certain grains, split peas, chickpeas, lentils and beans.
Fermentation is the newest alternative protein supply chain. It turns out that you can produce any type of protein using fermentation. It starts by identifying a microbial expression system which can produce the protein from a nutrient-rich broth. They make the target protein with nature-identical quality and very high efficiency. These proteins can then be produced at scale using conventional fermentation systems. The fermentation process eliminates the need for animals and helps create a more sustainable food supply.
The numbers show that trend continuing. Growth of plant-based protein and meat alternatives is projected to increase from $4.6 billion in 2018 to a whopping $85 billion in 2030.
